My experience at New Academy Canoga Park is unique because I have four children, two enrolled at NACP and two enrolled at a non-charter public elementary school. I’d like for all four to be at NACP, but it’s not possible at the moment. Two of my kids have special needs and there are more programs in place at their district school to support them. Being in this position is sometimes difficult because I have to navigate two very different systems, but it’s given me perspective about the different experiences that charter versus non-charter school students and families have.
Even though my children with special needs are receiving more support at their current school than they would at NACP, I have an easier time advocating for my children at New Academy. My opinions matter at NACP. Whenever I’ve brought up a problem or had a question, teachers and staff are quick to find solutions or make changes. At my childrens’ non-charter school, I often have to ask for something several times before anyone listens to me. Sadly, I feel like what I have to say isn’t being considered there. I know that the circumstances are different, classes at NACP are smaller, the community is tight-knit, and the parent center is really active. However, as someone who’s experienced both environments, I can tell you the difference is obvious.
When my children first started at NACP, I was really busy and I thought to myself, “why even go to workshops?” However, I’m now taking the CABE classes and it’s changed my whole outlook on education. I think more about the future now and what I can do to advocate for my kids. I realized that, as Latino parents, we have to make an effort to be interested in our children’s education even if we’re busy because if not they’ll miss out on opportunities. And I often feel like my non-charter school students are missing out on opportunities at their school. So, something that’s really important to me is thinking about how NACP can find more funding to serve special needs students. New Academy has empowered me to use what I learn in parent workshops and find ways to support them in putting more programs in place for students with special needs.

Navegando por las Escuelas Charter y No Chárter Me Ha Convertido En Un Defensor De Los Padres De New Academy Canoga Park
Mi experiencia en New Academy Canoga Park es única porque tengo cuatro hijos, dos inscritos en NACP y dos inscritos en una escuela primaria pública no chárter. Me gustaría que los cuatro estuvieran en NACP, pero no es posible en este momento. Dos de mis hijos tienen necesidades especiales y hay más programas en la escuela de su distrito para apoyarlos. Estar en esta posición a veces es difícil porque tengo que navegar por dos sistemas muy diferentes, pero me ha dado una perspectiva sobre las diferentes experiencias que tienen los estudiantes y las familias de escuelas charter versus no chárter.
A pesar de que mis hijos con necesidades especiales están recibiendo más apoyo en su escuela actual de lo que lo harían en NACP, me resulta más fácil abogar por mis hijos en New Academy. Mis opiniones importan en NACP. Cada vez que he planteado un problema o he tenido una pregunta, los maestros y el personal se apresuran a encontrar soluciones o hacer cambios. En la escuela tradicional de mis hijos, tengo que pedir algo varias veces antes de que alguien me escuche. Lamentablemente, siento que lo que tengo que decir no se está considerando allí. Sé que las circunstancias son diferentes, las clases en NACP son más pequeñas, la comunidad está muy unida y el centro de padres es realmente activo. Sin embargo, como alguien que ha experimentado ambos entornos, puedo decirte que la diferencia es obvia.
Cuando mis hijos comenzaron en NACP, estaba muy ocupada y pensé: “¿por qué ir a talleres?” Sin embargo, ahora estoy tomando las clases de CABE y ha cambiado toda mi perspectiva sobre la educación. Pienso más en el futuro ahora y en lo que puedo hacer para abogar por mis hijos. Me di cuenta de que, como padres latinos, tenemos que hacer un esfuerzo para interesarnos en la educación de nuestros hijos, incluso si estamos ocupados porque si no, perderán oportunidades. Y muy seguido siento que mis estudiantes que no son de escuelas charter están perdiendo oportunidades en su escuela. Entonces, algo que es realmente importante para mí es pensar en cómo NACP puede encontrar más fondos para servir a los estudiantes con necesidades especiales. New Academy me ha empoderado para usar lo que aprendo en los talleres para padres y encontrar formas de apoyarlos en poner más programas para estudiantes con necesidades especiales.
