NEW Academy of Science and Arts is committed to providing instruction, resources, and services to all students with special needs, helping them succeed and achieve their goals outlined in the individualized educational plan (IEP).
NEW Academy of Science and Arts is committed to the goal of providing an appropriate education for students with needs in the least restrictive environment. State and Federal Special Education laws and regulations, namely The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), govern the referral, evaluation and placement procedures.
Teachers provide instruction and employ multiple strategies and accommodations to make the subject matter more comprehensible to special education (SPED) students. Our trained educators and service providers are qualified to teach SPED students, meeting their individual needs.
We provide an inclusive environment that welcomes all learners, including students with unique needs.
Meet The Team
Special Education Designee
Works collaboratively with all members. Is responsible for planning, development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of programs for individuals with exceptional needs; provides training, resources, and/or consultation, coordination to special education staff, general education staff, administrators, classified staff and parents; monitors program compliance and ensures that procedures are appropriate in relation to policies required by state and federal regulatory requirements according to The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); responsible for analyzing data; assists in the supervision of support staff.

Case Manager
Manages all IEPs, including setting up and conducting IEP meetings. Coordinates services and evaluations of IEP students. Works with Welligent on the writing and implementation of IEPs at NASA.
TK - 2 Grade Resource Specialist Program (RSP) Teacher
TK - 2 Grade Resource Specialist Program (RSP) Teacher: Provides instruction and services to TK-2 students with unique needs according to IEP goals; provide information and assistance to students with disabilities and their parents; provide consultation, resource information and materials regarding IEP students to parents and to general education staff; coordinate special education services with the regular school program for students enrolled in the resource specialist program; monitor and record pupil progress; participate in the review and revision of IEP’s, as well as distribute IEP report cards; participate in the referral of pupils who do not demonstrate appropriate progress, as well as participation in the Student Support & Progress Team (SSPT) process; provide services, monitor, collect and record data for students in the Learning Center.
3 - 5 Grade Resource Specialist Program (RSP) Teacher
3 - 5 Grade Resource Specialist Program (RSP) Teacher: Provides instruction to 3-5 students with unique needs according to IEP goals; provide information and assistance to students with disabilities and their parents; provide consultation, resource information and materials regarding IEP students to parents and to general education staff; coordinate special education services with the regular school program for students enrolled in the resource specialist program; monitor and record pupil progress; participate in the review and revision of IEP’s, as well as distribute IEP report cards; participate in the referral of pupils who do not demonstrate appropriate progress, as well as participation in the SSPT process; provide services, monitor, collect and record data for students in the Learning Center.

Provides counseling as outlined on the IEP.

Occupational Therapy (OT):
It is a related service provided to students according to their IEP goal per the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Resource Specialist Program (RSP)
Resource Specialist Program (RSP):
Provides instruction and services for students whose needs have been identified in an IEP.
Adaptive Physical Education
Adaptive Physical Education (APE):
It is a related service provided to students according to their IEP goal per the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The program focuses on developmental gross motor activities, sports, based on the student’s disabilities, interests, and limitations.
Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH):
In this program, students' eligibility is based on documented hearing loss that inhibits communication and access to the core curriculum. According to the California Education Code Section 56000.5 (a)(2), students with low incident disability necessitate highly specialized services, materials, and equipment.
Language and Speech
Language and Speech (LAS):
Students with a speech disorder receive this related service to support their educational program. A speech disorder impacts a student's ability to participate in class and progress academically in language, fluency, articulation, and/or voice. Students' LAS based on their IEP goals.
Positive Behavior Support
Positive Behavior Support:
Comprises of prevention, intervention, and postvention support to ensure students are receiving Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) in accordance with their IEP.
Psychological Services
Psychological Services:
These services are offered to all students who need them to help them succeed academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. Psychologists, parents, and teachers work collaboratively to support students, creating a safe learning environment.
Parent Counseling and Training
Parent Counseling and Training:
It is a related service that provides information to parents on child development, helping them understand their child’s special needs. Parents acquire skills to help implement their child’s IEP.
Instruction
Instruction:
The special education (SPED) team focuses on high quality education. The SPED teams provide services and support to SPED students, helping them succeed in school in an inclusive environment. The SPED team works collaboratively with parents and students.
